Suggestions for Models – Preparing for the Shoot

The actual preparations for a shoot are fairly simple. The photographer probably will have a sheet of suggestions for you to review. Some will be mundane details about make-up, shoes to bring, clothes to wear and not wear (If you are going to be modeling nude, you will likely be asked not to wear underwear for several hours before the shoot. It leaves red marks on your skin which will show up in the photos, especially if the photographer is using film.)

If you want specific photographs of yourself, decide how to explain that to the photographer. Fine art photography of models is a professional and collaborative effort by both the photographer and the model. A photographer who does not want your input is probably just a GWC or a DOMWAC. (That is, a “Guy with a Camera” or a “Dirty Old Man with a Camera.”) If you have a specific pose or photo in mind make a rough sketch of it and take it along. Remember this is a collaborative effort. No one expects you to be a piece of modeling clay or to act like one.

If you want to be accompanied by someone of your choice to the shoot, discuss that with the photographer before you leave for the shoot. Most photographers do not mind someone coming along with you, especially if this is your first shoot with the photographer. All they will usually ask is that whoever comes with you not involve him or herself in the shoot. Know in advance how long the shoot is expected to last and always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

When you arrive for the shoot, provide the photographer with a photocopy of your Drivers License and insure that a model release acceptable to you has been signed and that you have a copy.

Finally, remember my advice to my daughter. If it doesn’t feel right, it isn’t. Leave.

But if it does feel right; stay, work hard and wait to see the art that ought to result.  And have fun.
