If you are interested in modeling for a photographer who does not know you but whose work you like, the best method of contacting him or her is the one that feels the most comfortable to you.  Many photographers have web sites and blogs with their contact information.  Feel like calling?  Then call.  Feel like writing?  Then email or snail mail.  It is up to you.

Before you make the contact it is a good idea for you to have some idea of what it is you want from the experience.  If you want to be paid for modeling, make that clear.  If you want some photographic prints for your own use and are willing to work TFP (Your Time for Prints) make that clear also.  If you want prints for your own portfolio, expect to pay in some form or another.  (Money or TFP)  If you aren’t sure, ask the photographer.  Many will pay you for your time and give you a few complimentary prints.

Expect to be asked to confirm your age.  When you and the photographer actually meet for the first time, take along a photocopy of your Drivers License.  If you are under 18, don’t bother unless you take one of your parents along to sign the release.  If you are thinking about posing nude, forget it entirely.  Wait until you are at least eighteen.  Most photographers will also want to see a photo or two of you, unless you are paying for the shoot.  You are entitled to see the photographer’s proposed model release.  Model releases are legally binding contracts and are negotiable.  If you want to suggest changes in the release, you are free to do so and the photographer is free to agree or not.  While it is not necessary to actually sign the release before going to the shoot, it is necessary that it be signed before the shoot begins.  Make certain you have a copy for yourself.  Keep it in a safe place and keep it forever.

If the photographer does not ask for you to confirm your age, does not provide a copy of the proposed release or in any way makes you uncomfortable, forget that photographer and find another.  Now.  From the day she was old enough to understand, I preached to my daughter to always pay attention to her gut feelings about any situation.  Listen to your body.  If it tells you something is amiss, then something is amiss.
